LSU (-3.5, ov48.5)
MISSISSIPPI STATE (+3.5, un48.5)

Short week for both these SEC teams. LSU (2-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) has had a
nice schedule, opening with a huge win over Oregon (40-27), then a
cupcake last week at home against Northwestern State (49-3) and now
starts their SEC slate. Despite suspensions, the Tigers went with
senior QB Jarrett Lee (2 TDs, 0 INTs) and he was pretty good, though
the ground game (175 yards) and the defense is what chewed up Oregon.
Soph RBs Spencer Ware and Mike Ford are a dynamic one-two backfield
punch. QB Jordan Jefferson is now suspended indefinitely, as is reserve
linebacker Josh Johns, because they are facing felony charges of second
degree battery stemming from a bar fight near campus last month. 8
starters return on offense, including the entire offensive line.
Spencer Ware and Michael Ford ran for two scores apiece and
second-ranked LSU overwhelmed Northwestern State 49-3 on Saturday
night. LSU led 28-3 by halftime, allowing coach Les Miles to give a
number of starters some rest in advance of the Tigers’ next game at
Mississippi State on Thursday night. Coveted junior college transfer
quarterback Zach Mettenberger made his debut in relief of LSU starter
Jarrett Lee to open the second half. The defense (18.2 ppg allowed) has
many talented pieces back, with sophomore CB Tyrann Matheiu, so almost
everyone is back from an 11-2 squad. The Tigers are 6-9 ATS in their
last 15 games in September and the Under is 29-15-1 in Tigers last 45
games as an underdog. The Mississippi State Bulldogs (1-1 SU/0-1 ATS)
have a powerful triple-option ground game for Coach Dan Mullen. The
rotate two quarterbacks and return senior quarterback Chris Relf and
sophomore QB Tyler Russell, rarely throwing the football. That ground
game was No. 16 in the nation last fall and returns senior RB Vick
Ballard, their top rusher. The offense rolled up 531 yards (333
rushing) but Auburn stole a 41-34 win over No. 16 Mississippi State on
Saturday. Both quarterbacks had interceptions returned for touchdowns,
but the offenses supplied most of the big plays. The real surprise was
the 2010 defense (19.8 ppg), one of the better in the country and
allowed just 19 ppg in the SEC. The linebacking corps lost its top
players, plus their defensive coordinator went to Texas, so
co-coordinators Chris Wilson and Geoff Collins step in. Seven starters
return led by a good line, though Auburn had 235 yards rushing. LSU
rolled 29-7 last September, holding Mississippi State to 268 total
yards and forcing 5 turnovers. LSU had only 264 total yards, so look
for plenty of defense.
Projected Score: LSU 23, Mississippi State 17
